Long-time International Tennis Federation official Juan Margets of Spain will stand for president of the sanctioning body after announcing his candidacy on Saturday at the Barcelona Open. The head of the influential Davis Cup Committee of the ITF also serves as ITF executive vice president. Voting will be held at the ITF general meeting on September 25 in Santiago, Chile. Current ITF head Francesco Ricci Bitti of Spain will not stand for re-election, throwing the field open. "I think I can contribute my knowledge and experience and work for an evolution of the ITF on a solid, stable base," said Margets, backed by Spanish Olympic Committee president Alejandro Blanco, and Spanish tennis boss Jose Luis Escanuela. Candidates for the top post must declare by May 25. Facing the new head will be sticky questions over the format of the century-old Davis Cup which has been drawing heavy criticism - and non-participation - from many top players including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. A proposal to end the longstanding home-and-away format will surely be facing the new ITF supremo. Margets seems to agree changes need to be implemented: "The final must be played on neutral ground, we must achieve a global product." The Catalan candidate added that retaining and renewing sponsorships was crucial for the Davis and Fed Cup competitions. Margets, a member of the Spanish Olympic committee, ran for president of the Spanish federation a decade ago but was defeated. Others in the running for the top ITF job include Anil Khanna, American Dave Haggerty and Swiss federation president Rene Stammbach. |
