The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Thursday
lifted a ban on the Moroccan football federation competing in the
next two African Cup of Nations tournaments.
Morocco had been banned by the Confederation of African Football
(CAF) for failing to organize the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF had turned down a request for the tournament to be postponed
following the Ebola epidemic in some West African countries. The
event in January and February went ahead in Equatorial Guinea.
The Lausanne-based CAS said its panel upheld the appeal by the Royal
Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) "in a large proportion."
The ruling means Morocco will be able to take part in the 2017 and
2019 tournaments.
"The sanctions imposed by the CAF on the FRMF have been set aside,
with the exception of the fine, which is however reduced to USD
50,000 (from 1 million)," a statement said.
The disqualification of the Moroccan team from the 2015 tournament is
however final, CAS said.
"The question related to the compensation of the possible damage
caused by the FRMF to the CAF may still be examined by another
jurisdiction," the statement added.
