Second seed Simona Halep fought her way into the
Porsche Grand Prix semi-finals, 6-4, 6-4 over Sara Errani in a
festival of service breaks on Friday.
Sixteen of the 20 games went to the receiving player as Halep at
least held serve three times in the 1 hour 21 minutes of play while
Errani managed only one successful service game.
Halep decided the duel of former French Opne finalists in the only
appropriate way, with a return winner - after the chair umpire had
ruled an Errani shot in on an earlier match point.
"She played and defended very well," Halep said. "The serve is not
her best shot and I tried to take risks against it in the second set.
"I have been playing well lately and that makes me pretty confident."
Halep has a tour-leading three titles in 2015 and will return to the
number two ranking next week after the early exit of holder Maria
Sharapova in Stuttgart.
She next meets either fourth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki or number
eight Carla Suarez Navarro. The other quarter-finals are number six
Ekaterina Makarova v local hope Angelique Kerber and Madison Brengle
v Caroline Garcia.
