Barcelona's Neymar (R) and Lionel Messi celebrate a goal against Espanyol
Barcelona kept top spot in the Spanish Liga Saturday
with an efficient 2-0 win at crosstown rivals Espanyol - despite
having left-back Jordi Alba sent off.
The win left Barca five points above second-placed Real Madrid, who
visit midtable Celta Vigo Sunday.
Neymar gave Barca the lead in the 17th minute by finishing a handsome
move between Lionel Messi and Alba.
Messi made it 2-0 eight minutes later by turning in a centre from
Luis Suarez, who was in an offside position. It was Messi's 36th goal
in La Liga, leaving him three behind Cristiano Ronaldo of Real.
Barca had Alba controversially sent off for dissent in the 54th
minute, but had few problems in holding out for a win against an
Espanyol side which only came out of their defensive shell in the
last 20 minutes. Espanyol's Hector Moreno was also sent off for
dissent, in stoppage time.
Neymar and Messi had good chances to increase Barca's lead, but the
little Argentine was defied by the woodwork on the hour after being
set up by the generous Suarez.
Barca's veteran playmaker Xavi came off the subs' bench at the end to
make his 500th league appearance.
