Seventh seed Nick Kyrgios will play the
first semi-final of his ATP career after easily defeating Robin Haase
Friday 6-3, 6-4 in just under an hour in their quarter-final at the
Estoril Open.
The Australian has already had a taste of elite competition, reaching
a Wimbledon quarter-final in 2014 and duplicating that showing in
January in Melbourne at his home grand slam.
Kyrgios, who turned 20 in Estoril, will play Saturday for a place in
the Portuguese final against Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, a
23-year-old who put out the eighth seed, Gilles Mueller, 6-2, 6-4 in
the quarters.
Kyrgios is playing this week after losing last week in Barcelona
while holding match points. He has been putting in post-match
training in Estoril as his build-up to Roland Garros starts to fall
into place.
The number 46, who came to Europe after missing six weeks with an
ankle injury suffered at Indian Wells, finished off the 101th-ranked
Haase in 56 minutes with seven aces and three breaks of serve.
The Aussie seed recovered from an early break in the opening set and
was never again threatened.
Carreno-Busta needed an hour and a quarter to get past Mueller after
losing to the European in the Australian Open's first round in
January.
This week in Estoril has been a lifeline for Carreno-Busta, who had
lost in six previous first rounds, beginning in February with Buenos
Aires. He was playing his sixth career quarter-final and first since
Valencia in October.
The Spaniard finished a career-high 51st last season, playing in four
clay quarters.
