Mainz defeated Schalke 2-0 thanks to a double from defender Stefan Bell Friday to move up to eighth in the Bundesliga and into the race for the European spots. Bell was perfectly placed to open the scoring from close range in the 27th minute when the ball fell to him in the six-yard box from Johannes Geis's corner. Just moments later the same player towered highest at the back-post at another corner to power home a header. Schalke had started the stronger team but home keeper Loris Karius denied Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Joel Matip. Mainz are now one point behind seventh, which could offer a Europa League place depending on the outcome of the German Cup. Schalke remain fifth but are 12 points behind Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League play-off spot. League leaders Bayern Munich can move closer to a 25th German championship when they host Hertha Berlin in Saturday's late game. |
